Haunted House

a cryptic puzzle by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon

Six times in this puzzle part of a clue answer vanishes, with a surviving fragment entered in the diagram. But the six departed specimens come back to haunt the grid; that is, they can be found lurking in the finished diagram, reading forward, back, up, down, or diagonally in any direction—in such a way that one letter from each "ghost" occupies one of the six otherwise unused boxes. The letters in those six boxes, when read from left to right and top to bot-tom, identify the "ghosts." Answers include seven proper nouns and less-than-common words at 32 Across and 19 Down.
